Description

In Episode 209 of the Transition Drill Podcast, Michael Moulton spent nearly thirty years in law enforcement, rising from patrol officer to the Chief of Police in El Cajon, California. His story is one of dedication, resilience, and leadership, and it resonates with veterans and first responders who understand the weight of service and the uncertainty of transition.

Raised in Southern California, Mike grew up with a sense of independence that shaped his path. From riding his bike through a small town to playing football under the watchful eye of a deputy coach, the seeds of service were planted early. When the Rodney King riots unfolded in 1992, he was just graduating high school. That moment pushed him toward criminal justice classes and ultimately into the police academy, where he celebrated his twenty-first birthday.

His career was marked by diverse assignments. He worked as a gang detective, took part in narcotics and undercover operations, and served on the SWAT team. Those experiences sharpened his skills and prepared him for leadership. As he promoted through the ranks to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain, Mike discovered the fulfillment of mentoring younger officers and shaping the direction of an organization. By the time he became chief, he was leading through one of the most turbulent eras in American policing.

Mike reflects on the challenges of recruitment, the importance of mental health, and the cultural changes in law enforcement. He shares how his department navigated national unrest and how critical it became to protect the wellness of both officers and dispatchers.

Now retired, he speaks openly about the transition, the adjustment to life after the badge, and the importance of preparation. His story offers both inspiration and practical wisdom for veterans and first responders seeking to navigate their own next chapter with strength, purpose, and clarity.
